about

The last song to be written for the album. I specifically wanted to write something a bit quicker, and the guitar riff came to me quite quickly. I’ve long wanted to write about our tendency to “sweat the small stuff” and put too much emphasis on little details. I found this particularly at a certain point of lockdown, there seemed to be a specific point where the “we’re all in this together” attitude changed to “you’re not doing lockdown correctly”. Of course this shift was helped in no small way by confusing and conflicting messages from our leaders and media. Anyway, this is a reminder that “tiny differences” don’t mean you don’t share wider, more significant values with people.

lyrics

We let the devil take control of the detail
And then we watched him hammer in the final nail
And as he blinded us with all the things our friends were doing wrong
We forgot to see the ways we get along and what keeps us strong
And now the tension makes us disconnect
So much so that I’m a nervous wreck
I lightly tread another path away from the debate
Just in case I open the up gate and I’m crushed by the weight
Of a thousand tiny differences
Each one just a speck on the lens
A thousand tiny differences between enemies and friends
A false consensus gives us confidence
That how we think is common sense
But when ignorance is multiplied like a river it will flow
Just because you think it, doesn’t make it so
So dig below
A thousand tiny differences
Each one just a speck on the lens
A thousand tiny differences between enemies and friends
And if you’re paying attention you’ll see it happening time and again
And it seems just an ounce of prevention can take away a kilo of pain
We’re all just passengers here on this ride
It takes a lot to swallow up our pride
With constant information new things come to light
It’s fine to reassess what’s right even despite
A thousand tiny differences
Each one just a speck on the lens
A thousand tiny differences between enemies and friends
A thousand tiny differences
Each one is just a speck on the lens
A thousand tiny differences between enemies and friends
