about

I think it’s pretty obvious this is a reaction to the Covid19 pandemic. It’s about being forced to reassess your situation and your priorities, understanding what we take for granted, and keeping yourself mentally strong for when “normality” returns. I’ve always found maritime metaphors to be incredibly powerful, and that’s why the main theme in the song is that of a shipwreck/castaway. Other references of interest… The “empty throne” line refers to the confusing and lack of clear guidance surrounding the pandemic, and the line “It’s true you know, don’t it always seem to go” is a hat-tip to Joni Mitchell and Big Yellow Taxi.

lyrics

When the dark fell we crawled back in to our shells
And we learned well, about purgatory and hell
To a large degree, we were lost at sea
And so we looked for navigation back to the shore
Behind the cabin doors we fought an invisible war
With the unknown, and an empty throne
And no one to guide us home
Take what you can from this, don’t let it drag you down
Keep treading water ‘til you stand on solid ground
Cos if you keep yourself afloat for when you see that lifeboat
You can climb aboard
In the eye of the storm all of the boundaries are redrawn
And how we mourn all the things we used to scorn
It’s true you know, don’t it always seem to go
That at midnight it’s impossible to see the daylight
And it’s not right you never signed up for this fight
But it hits you, that you’ve got to find your way anew
Take what you can from this, don’t let it drag you down
Keep treading water ‘til you stand on solid ground
Cos if you keep yourself afloat for when you see that lifeboat
You can climb aboard
Take what you can from this, don’t let it drag you down
Keep treading water ‘til you stand on solid ground
Cos if you keep yourself afloat for when you see that lifeboat
You can climb aboard
And if the world should end this way don’t you think you’d like to say
That you gave it your all?
